Commentary on the movie 'Skyline'

When I first saw the trailers for the 2010 movie "Skyline", I instantly knew that it would be important to write about this movie. While presented as a sci-fi alien invasion movie, several major parts of the plot seem to be based on skewed interpretations of the Christian teachings about the Rapture. I believe this is done intentionally in order to make it easier to explain away the Rapture as an alien abduction when it occurs. This deception of the Rapture as an Alien Abduction has already been promoted by many new-age channelers [1], UFO enthusiasts, and mainstream hollywood media in movies such as the 2009 movie "Knowing". However, Skyline is the most blatant attempt at a movie to date which tries to copy all aspects of the Rapture. Lets look and see how the movie Skyline clearly could be used to decieve everyone about the Rapture.

Brief Synopsis of the movie Skyline

First, if you have not seen the movie, here is a brief summary (and contains spoilers). The movie focusses on a small group of people living in an apartment in Los Angeles. During the night, alien spacecraft appear and send out a mysterious blue light which lures people outside, and they are then quickly "vacuumed up" onto massive awaiting alien motherships. It can be seen that this mysterious alien light has a physical effect on humans, and makes their bodies start to change and the people feel they are compelled to go towards the light.

The people in the apartment close the blinds and stay inside, while watching the rest of the alien invasion take place outside. The aliens land and start sending out sentries to find and abduct as many people as possible. There are a series of action scenes as the main characters try to rescue others from their apartments, and try to escape from their apartment building. Finally, some of the characters die or are abducted, and only two remain. They try to fight back but are also soon abducted. In the alien spacecraft it is shown that the aliens are taking people's brains and putting them into the bodies of the strange alien creatures which are abducting the remaining humans. After this brain transplantaion, the lead character somehow retains his personality, rescues his girlfriend (who is still human) and most likely tries to escape the alien mothership (as shown during the credits).

Similarities to the Rapture

While it sounds like a rather weird alien movie, it is much more than that. Christians who are familiar with the teachings of the Rapture will see many striking (although distorted) similarities. For a more in-depth discussion of the Rapture, see my article here. Lets look at the similarities between the Rapture and the movie Skyline:

People Flying Through the Air

This is the first alien movie I've seen (and I've seen a lot) where the people are actually vacuumed up en masse through the air into alien spacecraft hovering above the city. At one point in the movie, an elderly character says he saw it and thought it was "Just like the God-damned Rapture!". The Rapture teaches that Jesus will one day suddenly return to earth, and all the Christians will be instantly transported from earth to meet Jesus in the clouds: "With a loud command and with the shout of the chief angel and a blast of God's trumpet, the Lord will return from heaven... Next, all of us who are still alive will be taken up into the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the sky." (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18). This part of Skyline is a clear attempt at associating alien abduction with the sudden disappearance of Christians during the Rapture.

People's Bodies are Transformed

In Skyline, whenever a person looks at the blue alien light, their bodies start to change. Their eyes change color and their skin grows strange vein patterns, but the changes disappear when not looking at the light. One character is exposed to the light several times, and eventually develops a strange pulsing blob of changed flesh in his side/abdomen. It is never explained what this is. The character says the light makes him feel powerful, and this amplified strength is apparent later in the movie when he beats a large alien sentry to death with his bare hands. Later, the character's brain is removed from his body and transplanted into a completely new alien body (although for some reason he keeps his human personality). It is not explained how - all the other humans seem to lose theirs and fully become aliens.

This is a horribly distorted version of part of the teachings about the Rapture. At the Rapture, all Christians will recieve new bodies. The Bible says: "Not every one of us will die, but we will all be changed. It will happen suddenly, quicker than the blink of an eye...We will all be changed so that we will never die again. Our dead and decaying bodies will be changed into bodies that won't die or decay." (1 Corinthians 15:51-53). And also "These ugly and weak bodies will become beautiful and strong." (1 Corinthians 15:43). I belive the transformation of the characters in the movie Skyline is intended to copy this aspect of the Rapture. However, Christians do not become "aliens" at the Rapture - we will remain human, but will be humans with no physical flaws at all, and indestructible and beautiful bodies. Not like the disgusting idea of a "brain transplant" to an ugly alien body as promoted in Skyline.

People Have no Choice to Be Abducted

The people who are vacuumed up or abducted by the aliens in Skyline have no choice but to go. When they are posessed by the strange blue light, the say they are 'compelled' to go outside to go towards the alien spacecraft. When the Rapture happens, all Christians - no matter where they are, how old, or even if they want to go or not - will be instantly taken to meet Jesus. Surprisingly enough, some Christians don't believe in the Rapture. Some even want to stay behind to fight the Antichrist during the Tribulation which follows the Rapture. However, these Christians will also be Raptured.

I suspect the reason why Skyline adds the part about people being drawn to the aliens is to give an excuse for why ALL Christians disappear during the Rapture. It is easier for the Antichrist to tell those left behind "Your loved ones were posessed and brainwashed into allowing 'the aliens' to take them away. If they had a free choice they would have stayed behind with you because they loved you." This would instill fear and hatred of the supposed "aliens" into humanity, and this common enemy would make it easier to unite the world into a single government under the Antichrist. This worldwide government is predicted in the Bible according to the books of Daniel and Revelation.

Skyline is a False Rapture Explanation

Skyline is the most blatant "false Rapture" explanations I have ever seen in the mainstream media. I believe Satan is trying to get the idea of alien abductions into the public's mind so that when the Rapture occurs it will be much easier for people to accept it [2]. Previously, the movie Knowing (2009) was the closest I had seen to a false Rapture explanation (see here), but Skyline surpasses it by leaps and bounds. I suspect these two movies, along with the increase of mainstream news reports of UFOs over the last year is working towards this deception. I have already done analysis here which shows that UFOs are much more likely to be demonic than extraterrestrial and are working under Satan to help create this deception.

I do not know if I would recommend this movie or not. If you are a strong Christian who believes in the Rapture, I would say it is very useful to see the sort of lies and deception which is being promoted through Skyline. Also, if you have non-Christian friends who believe in aliens it might be a good way of telling them about the Rapture and Jesus, and even warning them that it may be part of a plan to trick everyone. In the movie when one character said "It's just like the Rapture" was such a blatant attempt of linking alien abductions with the Rapture that I was shocked! This shows how confident (or desperate) Satan has become that he no longer hides his planned deception from the world. I believe that the Tribulation is approaching very soon now (see here), and the Rapture could happen literally anytime.
